“Many African societies have a rich tradition of masquerades, which are plays, ceremonies, or dances by masked performers. Masquerades provide entertainment, define social roles, and communicate reli- gious meaning. The masks used in such performances may be treasured as works of art.”
To outsiders, masquerades are often scary figures, sometime associted with dark magic and spirits. In actuality masquerades are integral and complex characters in Central and West african cultures. This project aims to showcase the different masquerades of Africa and their mythologies.
The viewer is taken on an abstract and mystic journey through the world of the masquerades. Gods and spirits represented by abstract shapes, in addition to this because masqueraders are often dancers, the piece is filled with movement.
